How verbs combine!

  • PRESENT SIMPLE
    When the AUXiliary is DO (do, does), the main Verb is a bare INFINITIVE
  • PRESENT CONTINUOUS
    When the AUXiliary is BE (am, is, are), the main Verb is a GERUND (-ing)
  • MODAL AUXILIARIES
    When the modal AUXiliary is CAN, the main Verb is a bare INFINITIVE

ALWAYS AND FOREVER!!

  • I get up at six – I don’t get up at seven – What time do you get up?
  • I am watching TV – I am not listening to English! – Are you waiting for me?
  • I can speak English – I can’t play the guitar – Can you drive?
